January 2018 Stitch Fix Review

So I got my Stitch Fix on a Friday, it was supposed to be returned and I hadn’t tried on the clothes yet and then I had surgery. Luckily, the company is great and gave me a couple of weeks to try them on. So I waited until I felt comfortable trying on clothes.

Anyway, here is how it works if you are new:

1. Fill out your Style Profile. This gives detail on your style, sizes, budget and anything else like a link to your pinterest board.

2. Once you have “ordered” your box, they will send you 5 items from a personal stylists.  It is a $20 styling fee which is applied as a credit toward anything you keep.

3. Try everything on. They send you Style Cards with recommendations on how to wear your outfit.  You have three days to decide what you do and do not want.

4. Buy what you like and return the rest. If you keep all 5 items, you get 25% off your entire purchase.  Don’t like something, they send you a pre-paid mailing bag to drop in the mailbox.  It is free shipping.

Here is what I got:

I have a new stylist this month which sometimes means you are starting from scratch but I think my new stylists did a pretty good job.

Vigross Erika Skinny Jean ($68) & Pixley Axel Colorblock Mesh Insert Pullover ($58)

IMG_20180124_193256668

Sorry the picture is blurry, my son was attacking my photographer. The top is a light sweater with a purple triangle at the neckline and a purple stripe down both arms. Not really my color choice or design. The jeans are comfy but seem tight. It could be that they are too small or I am still bloated from my surgery. I really don’t want to keep them though and it be that they are just too small.

Kaileigh Katinka Knit Dress ($48)

IMG_20180124_193732389

This dress is really comfy and my husband loves this dress. However, I am not a fan of the bell sleeves.  Not sure if I can get past it.

Same jeans and Truly Poppy Jarred Lace Detail Cap-Sleeve Blouse ($58)

I love this shirt and so do my two friends who I sent these pictures to. My son did not as he said “Oh no, holes!” That is style advice from a toddler. I believe this top will be a keeper. I like that is has some sexiness without being trashy and still modest.

Mix by 41 Hawthorn Abrianna Longsleeve Knit Cardigan ($38) and the same jeans and black top.

IMG_20180124_193612363

First, I love the color. While I own a lot of cardigans, I do not own any this vibrant shade of purple which is labeled as Jewel Tone Purple. I love cardigans as a teacher because I can put on some simple pants, a tank and wear a cardigan for an easy but put together outfit.

So comment below on what I should keep.

Want to try it yourself? Go here. I pay for this myself.

Turkey Ragu

A few weeks ago I made my husband a pasta dish called Turkey Ragu. He really enjoyed it.

Turkey Ragu

Husbands rating: 5/5

Ease: 5/5

Changes: I didn’t add the wine, garlic, rosemary or parsley because I didn’t have it but he still liked it.

Recipe: You can find it here.

Deconstructed Tuna Melt

This week I cooked my husband a meal that he really didn’t want me to cook. Not because he thought it would taste bad but because I had a surgery this week(more on that in a later post). However, this recipe was so easy that I didn’t have to stand long for it or do much. Technically this recipe is called Skillet Tuna Melt but I didn’t use a skillet, I used a pan.

Skillet Tuna Melt or Deconstructed Tuna Melt

Ease: 5/5. Throw everything in a bowl and stir, then plop it into the oven.

Husbands rating: 5/5

Changes: Added some hot spice and didn’t add parsley or garlic. Also, I cooked it in a regular pan.

Recipe: You can find it here.

Houston Marathon 2018 Recap

I am going to recap the 2018 Houston Marathon since it has been a few days and I think I can write about it as I am all recovered from it. It is really a weekend and not just a day so I will start with the whole weekend. Warning: this will be long.

Friday

I went to work. Okay so I will start with after work. Every year one of my friends host a girls pasta dinner at her house.  We all bring something to share with everyone. It is always a lot of fun, lots of laughs and lots of friendship. It is one of my favorite nights. It was also nice to see some women who I don’t run with (because of different paces).

Saturday

My family decided to go get my packet in the afternoon. You have Friday or Saturday to get it. I would love to get in on Friday because it is not as busy but they close at 6, and I wouldn’t be able to get there until like 5:30 and I would like to shop too.  I usually spend about 2 hours at the Expo. So we went Saturday afternoon hoping to not have as many crowds as the morning is usually packed. Well it was still really busy. Maybe I should try even later on Saturday. So I picked up my packet and then bought 4 headbands at Sweaty Bands.  They are my absolute favorite. They also had a good deal of buy 3 get 1 free and that included the $5 clearance so I got 4 headbands for $15. You can find them here, they don’t pay me.

Sweaty Bands are amazing!

Otherwise I didn’t buy anything else. Just walked around the booths, took pictures, signed me day, etc.

Many pictures taken at the Expo

Oh and I always wear a silly shirt to the Expo like this one is a Turkey Trot shirt. I don’t know why, just like to scare my competition on how fierce I am.

Sunday

My friend picked me up at 5 am and drove me to the start. She was also running. In the past, my husband drove me but we decided this was better so he could get to the first spot to watch me and allow my son some more sleep time. So we got in the GRB at like 5:30. What is great about Houston is the start/end is at this huge Convention Center and you get to hang inside until the start. It was like 32 degrees so everyone was all bundled. I decided to wear capris and a long-sleeve shirt plus gloves. Inside the building, it is just a bunch of pictures being taken.  Since I am in a running club, we all take a bunch of pictures together. The start of the race is at 7 am but I was in C corral.

So I headed towards the start with a couple of friends. One decided to get closer to the start since she is a faster runner. The rest stayed behind. We ended up not getting to the start line until like 7:36. So we start and it was cold and glorious. My husband and son were at mile 2. I also saw a girl I went to high school with. At this point I was running with my training buddy and another girl who was running the half.

At mile 6, my husband and son were there. I gave my husband my gloves. My training buddy had already given him her gloves and her jacket. She was already in just a tank and shorts. A mile later, my training buddy was in the area where her students live.  So one of her students had donut holes for us. It was amazing. After mile 8, the half breaks apart from the full so we lost the other girl and it was just me and my training buddy.

At mile 10, my husband and son were back. This was also the first time my son looked awake and smiled when he saw me. We also saw our friends husband who snapped this picture.

Mile 10

We kept running and my friend saw her family. We finally got to the first big hill of the race. After the hill, our friends husband was back. The halfway point is a disappointment because it is hard for people to get to and it is a little out and back. The only good part is you get to see some people in front of you and behind you.

Mile 15, my friend grabbed a beer from the Buffalo Bayou Brewery guys. My husband and son were also there cheering so I gave them a high 5. My son looked very happy just eating his snacks.

At mile 16, we saw our friends and their kids. It gave us some energy because we were not expecting to see them. We also saw some more friends at mile 18 and mile 19. This is usually a hard part of the race because there are not many spectators and there is no entertainment. So us seeing our friends was really nice. I also saw someone from my Crossfit gym at mile 18 and ran with him for a minute.

Mile 18

So my training buddy used the restroom at mile 19 and that was the last I saw her. One thing they did this year that I loved was they had speakers playing music from mile 19-22. Again, this is a part where there are not many spectators. I saw one of my friends struggling at mile 20 so I talked to her for a second. I was feeling great at that point and thought I could get my B goal at that point.  My A goal was to finish. B was a time goal. My husband and son were at mile 21 and I told them I would see them at the finish. Around mile 22 is when the spectators pick back up. Right before mile 23 I see a guy who use to run with my running club. He has had health problems so I cried and hugged him when I saw him.

At mile 24, Karbach Brewery was there with some of my friends.  It was such a boost to see them all. I ended up finishing the race at 4:52:22 which is my 4th fastest time, I believe. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. My time goal was under 5 so I was really happy.

Once inside, I got my medal, shirt and got some chocolate milk. I talked to my former students mom, talked to some of my friends and saw another former student waiting for his family. My husband met me in the reunion area and took me to the car. He always has Crave cupcakes waiting for me which I love.

The weather was perfect and was a big redemption from last years horrible race. Maybe I am over the dramatic experience of the 2017 Houston Marathon. I am sure I forgot something but whatever.

December Updates

December just flew by..sorta. Sometimes I was like “Man, four weeks until Winter Break” and other times it flew by. I can’t believe it is now 2018. I really do not make resolutions but I am going to try this year to take time to breathe. Like it is okay to stay in my house and relax. I don’t always have to be on the move. Anyway, my life in December.

Working Out

Last month before my big race so I did some long runs this month like a 20 miler. I felt great on that run. I also hit some PRs at Crossfit. December has been pretty cold here(for Houston) which is my favorite running temperatures. I love it in the 40s. There has also been hot humid days too. It was very weird and explains why everyone got sick this month.

Camping

After my 20 miler, we went camping at Lost Maples State Park which is like 60 miles west of San Antonio. It was in the 30s throughout the night and rainy. My husband packed our car and forgot to pack my suitcase so my coat, socks, everything was in my house. So I was really cold. The next morning though, we went on a nice hike as a family(dog too) and it was beautiful. Highly recommend that park.

Friends

We had a lot of fun with friends in December. I started December with a baby shower for a friend which my husband even went because it was at a playground so the kids could play. The night I went with a friend to an ugly sweater party. I had a couple of Christmas Light Runs with friends which are my favorite. I did a dinner with some sorority sisters. I saw my college roommate/sorority sister and went on a brewery tour with a friend before New Years.  Some of this will be extended on.

Brewery

On the 30th, we went with a friend to two new to us breweries.  They are both close to me and one hasn’t officially had their grand opening.  We went to Wicked Boxer Brewery and Bearded Fox. Wicked Boxer is new and hasn’t had their big grand opening yet.  The space was small but cute. Bearded Fox has been open for a while and has stuff for kids, free popcorn and had a food truck on site which was nice.

Travel

I had to take a weekend trip to Dallas for a training for my volunteer job. We stayed at a Marriott because it was next door to the training. The hotel was nice and the food was good. The gym looked pretty nice but I didn’t work out in there. They had little maps of running routes in the area so I did that. I ran before the sun came up since my training was early and the only problem was one of the routes you went on a cute path except it was dark, no lights, and no one could see it. So the next day, I turned before the path and just ran in a neighborhood instead.

Health

My son had an appointment with his allergist and he is still allergic to peanuts but not as bad as last year which is a good sign. I did feel bad because the night before, my son was cleaning up his toys and fell right on the coffee table so his cheek was all cut up and bruised.

Holidays

For the holidays we traveled to St. Louis to see my mom, aunts, sister, etc. We stayed with my mom and got in Christmas Eve. I had won a free drink ticket on my flight for knowing my Christmas trivia. My sister had ordered my favorite pizza for when we arrived. It was cold the whole time I was in St. Louis like 18 degrees as the high cold. The only good thing, there was snow the whole time.

White Christmas. Deers in my moms backyard.

For Christmas we went to Illinois to have lunch at my aunt’s house. It was nice to see everyone including my cousins. The night my mom, sister and I went and saw Father Figure which I do not recommend. We did get Steak N Shake beforehand so that was enjoyable.

On Tuesday we went to Myseum to let Eli play all day. He had a blast and it was a great place. That night I caught dinner with my college roommate, her husband and her daughter at Kirkwood Station Brewery. It is always great to see her.

On Wednesday we went to Chesterfield Sports Fusion to play mini golf. Unfortunately my son had no interest in playing minigolf so it was a bust.

We left super early the next day. So it was a great trip but short.

For New Years Eve, some friends came to a restaurant by me to eat dinner and celebrate. I was home at like 8:30 and then watched Dick Clark’s NYE or whatever it is called. Very low-key but whatever.

So that was my December summed up pretty quickly. Last thing, I saw the movie Miss You Already and I really enjoyed it.

Cheesy Baked Burrito

Okay last recipe post for a while since I will be caught up and my husband is eating tamales I had bought him this week. So I made him baked burritos a couple of weeks ago. He really enjoyed them.

Cheesy Baked Burritos

Husbands rating: 5/5. He just said I should have cut the chicken into skinnier pieces, my bad. That’s what happens when a vegetarian prepares it.

Ease: 4/5. It wasn’t hard but since I used chicken breast that I had to cut and cook, it just took awhile.  Plus packing the burritos was sometimes a pain.

Changes: I didn’t use rotisserie chicken.  I just grilled up some chicken breast. I also do not think I used garlic.

Recipe: You can find it here.
